Engine details
The Docker engine
Docker is an open source technology that is used for the containerization of applications, apps & software - ie they run in containers. The Docker Engine offers many advantages: any number of containers can be started from a container image and run when required and can also be easily stopped again. Unlike virtual machines, all dependencies are deployed in the container and require fewer system resources. The underlying IT infrastructure can be relatively flexible and consist of a cloud or servers, for example. Containers share a common host OS (traditionally Linux, but today also Windows & MacOS). On top of the host OS lies the Docker Engine, which enables and manages app containers.
Advantages: Docker Containers vs. Virtualization (VM)
Compared to classic virtualization, the engine offers some strong advantages. With virtual machines (VMs), each machine needs its own OS, they use a lot of system resources (RAM, ROM), are slow to start up (since a complete OS has to be started in each required virtual machine). Multiple virtual machines are often required for multiple applications/apps. This is where Docker comes in: several containers that share a common host OS are started or stopped from an image in the engine as required. Booting from an image makes rollbacks easy. In addition, the image file is easy to copy, which enables quick, easy backups & migrations between underlying infrastructures (cloud, server, etc.) and OS systems (Linux, Windows, MacOS).
Orchestration for more efficiency
With efficient orchestration (e.g. with Ansible & Docker Composer), high system performance and efficiency can be achieved with little effort for standardized large-scale Docker applications. This reduces costs and increases technical robustness. Ansible uses scripts via SSH for remote control, configuration, administration and maintenance of the system. Docker Composer is used for dependency management using PHP (so that, for example, required libraries are automatically installed in the system).
Cons: Docker vs. Virtual Machine (VM)
Compared to classic virtualization, certain disadvantages must be considered. Virtual machines have a higher level of security, since they work relatively isolated, while containers share essential components (e.g. the host OS). Containers may not be suitable for all conceivable applications and services.
How much does your Docker application cost?
This depends largely on your requirements. Contact us, briefly describe your ideas and one of our employees will conduct an initial consultation with you. We will then present you with a rough concept and a non-binding, detailed cost offer.
