The virus from the copier

The emails with the sender address kopierer@domain.de (where domain.de stands for the domain of the respective company) do not really come from the copier in the corridor. Instead, the attacker tries to trick unsuspecting or careless company employees into opening the attached Word file, which can then use Word macros to infect the PC. If you actually receive such an email: better delete it!

Printers: an underestimated danger?

However, according to Chris Vickery, network printers in companies can pose a risk on his blog. According to his investigations, several thousand printers from HP can be reached as anonymous FTP servers via inadequately protected company networks on the Internet and allow the storage of - possibly illegal - data or potentially dangerous tools on their internal memories, some of which are several GB in size. Administrators should ensure that port 9100 is closed on the company firewall and also regularly check whether the manufacturer has released the latest firmware for the printers used in order to close these and any other potentially dangerous security gaps.
